Aurora Writers Workshop is a nonprofit organization offering a weekend-long writing retreat in the city of Aurora, IL. We host readings, small-group sessions with published authors, and social time for three days in June to help writers connect, learn, and hone their craft.
AWW also hosts a monthly writing group meeting on the first Tuesday from 7-8:30 at the Santori Branch of the Aurora Public Library, and a bi-monthly poetry book group that meets at Yellow Bird Books in downtown Aurora.
Your tuition of $200 covers all the events including the Friday evening keynote, Saturday courses and dinner, and Sunday morning group writing and open mic. There will be light snacks Friday evening and soft drinks, and a continental breakfast on Sunday. You are on your own for breakfast and lunch Saturday. See the Schedule of Events for more information.
On the Registration Page, choose the faculty member you'd like to work with during the small group session on Saturday. Register for their course, and you are registered for the full weekend.
On the website homepage, use the Contact Us form to be added to a waitlist. If someone has to cancel, an email will go out to people on the waitlist for a first-come-first-served opening.
There is not, but when a course fills with 12 participants, it will be marked SOLD OUT. You can register right up to the event starting as long as tickets are available.
Because this is a small group event, and it runs on a tight budget, we cannot offer refunds. However, your tuition is transferrable to someone else. We will keep a waitlist of people who want to participate after registration is closed to help you transfer, but if there is no waitlist, it's up to you to find someone to take your place/pay you for the ticket. If you do this, please let us know, so we know who to expect.
Friday night we kick off with a keynote speaker who will read from their work, speak about their writing process, and participate in a Q&A. Saturday we will have four hours of small group sessions with the author of your choosing. Saturday we'll conclude with a dinner at at a downtown Aurora restaraunt and a faculty reading. The dinner is included in your registration and consideration is taken of any dietary restrictions. Sunday morning we will meet as a large group for a generative writing activity and a student open-mic. You can also see the Schedule of Events.
There are several hotels in the area, but right downtown is the Holiday Inn Express. They are offering special rates of you book via this link. When you enter the dates you'd like the stay, the rate will come up. It does fill up on summer weekends due to weddings and other events.
There will be available handicapped parking at all the events. If you can comfortably walk, the longest distance you'll cover is ess than a mile from one place to the next. On Saturday there is a two-hour break for lunch, and there are many restaurants ranging from taquerias and pub food to more expensive offerings like Latin Fusion and Italian all near the buildings where you'll have sessions.
